What is the Assistant Teacher Award Course

The Assistant Teacher Award Course is designed for students aged 14 or older who aspire to become dance educators. It offers a comprehensive pathway towards becoming a qualified dance teacher at the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD).

Mentoring and Work Experience

Students will be mentored by a certified instructor with extensive experience and professional knowledge. The instructor will provide teaching and guidance through RAD-approved training programs. Under their supervision, students will participate in relevant dance practice activities both inside and outside the school, developing the various professional and teaching abilities required of assistant teachers.

Self-Reflection Learning

In addition to meeting the competency requirements, students are required to produce a self-reflective report (verbal or written) detailing their learning process, identifying areas for growth, and reflecting on their development as assistant teachers.

Flexible Completion Schedule

The course offers a flexible timetable for completion. Most students can expect to finish within one to two years. However, students with prior experience may complete the program faster, while those balancing academic or personal commitments may take longer. The maximum period for completion is five years.

Students may apply for a deferral during their studies, provided they submit valid reasons and supporting documentation. However, if classes have already started in any given month, students must complete that month's sessions before the deferral takes effect for the following month.

Continuous Evaluation Framework

The course follows a continuous assessment model. If students are not fully successful in their practical assessments, they will have multiple opportunities to improve and request reassessment.

Recognition and Future Opportunities

Upon successful completion, students will be awarded the Assistant Teacher Award Certificate. This qualification enables them to work as assistant teachers and participate in related teaching activities. Additionally, students wishing to further their dance education can be approved by our school and receive discounts when enrolling in the Royal Academy of Dance Teacher – Certificate in Dance Teaching (Ballet) (CDT Ballet), which qualifies them to become registered ballet teachers.
